In year 4, we are passionate about reading and utilise opportunities throughout the day to do so!
It is not only important to be reading frequently, and for pleasure, but also to comprehend what is being read. To ensure this process of understanding is taking place, each child completes a short book review after they have finished reading it. This is then showcased in our class reading folder that is kept on top of our library shelves so that children who are struggling to choose a book / want to try something new can get recommendations from their peers! Year 4 are loving doing this and sharing their thoughts and opinions on texts they have read.
Similarly, we have a popular initiative in class for reading called the golden ticket awards! If
a child has 3 or more parent signatures to evidence home reading in diaries, they will
receive a ticket to add to our jar.
3 x signatures = 1 ticket, 6 x signatures = 2 tickets etc.
At the end of each half term, we will choose 5 tickets from the jar who will
receive a prize – the more tickets, the more likely the prize! We found this is a fun incentive to encourage more
home reading and to ensure parents are witnessing reading for pleasure / full comprehension of texts. As you can see, the children already have MANY tickets ready for our first draw!
