Year 6 enjoyed making bags of blood in science this week! The children now know that 50% of our blood is water; that water also makes up 90% of our plasma (represented by golden syrup mixed into water); red blood cells (represented by cheerios and food colouring) carry oxygen around our bodies; platelets (represented by balls of masking tape) coagulate to form scabs; and that white blood cells (represented by mini-marshmallows) fight off viruses and bacteria. We also delved into two types of white blood cell: phagocytes and lymphocytes. The children then drew pictures which represented the roles each of these play before playing a detective game inspired by these miniature heroes!
