The Yoto Carnegie Greenaway Awards celebrate outstanding achievement in writing and illustration for children and young people respectively and are unique in being judged by librarians, with the Shadowers' Choice Award voted for by children and young people.
Sixteen books have been selected in total – eight for the Yoto Carnegie Medal and eight for the Yoto Kate Greenaway Medal – from a longlist of 33 titles. They were chosen by an expert team of volunteer judges, featuring 14 librarians from CILIP's Youth Libraries Group based across the UK.
Every year, schools around the UK and internationally take part in an Awards' Shadowing Scheme, 'shadowing' the judging process: they read, discuss and review the books on each shortlist selected by CILIP's panel of judges and engage in reading related activity online.
At Audlem St James Primary School we intend to take part in the shadowing process. During our launch assembly we looked at the shortlisted books. We listened to the opening of 'Too Much Stuff' by Emily Gravett and we watched the author interview.
Over the next few weeks, we will share the books and decide on our favourites. The children will have the chance to submit their responses.
