This afternoon, the children learned about some of the finds from the Sutton Hoo burial site (as well as a couple from the Staffordshire Hoard). We watched an in-depth analysis of some of the artefacts by the British Museum and we identified the key themes which the Anglo-Saxons used in their jewellery – such as interweaving, ambiguous animal engravings.
Afterwards, the class started designing an Anglo-Saxon cushion (fit for a king to sit on) which they will sew after the half-term break. These designs included their initials in Futhorc runes, different stitches used by the Anglo-Saxons, and hidden animals.
