Welcome to ReceptionOne of our topics this year has been Percy the Park Keeper. We have his little hut in our classroom and have been helping him look after his animal friends. They are the fox, the badger, the owl, the mole, the rabbits, the squirrels, the mice and the hedgehog. We have also looked at penguins and polar bears. Recently we looked at farm animals and how they grow. This included hatching chickens. During a nasty storm (After the Storm by Nick Butterworth) the animal’s tree blew down and left them all homeless. We helped Percy to make them a new home. We even made them some ‘Welcome to your new tree’ cards.
After helping to make the animals a new home we looked at how old their tree was by counting the rings. We then made our own tree rings using paint and wool. Do you know what happens when you add white or black to brown paint? We do!
As Autumn turned to winter in the Park ‘One Snowy Night’ Percy’s friends all wanted to share his bed for the night. We acted the story out together, we all wanted a turn at being Percy. Then we made a new quilt for Percy’s bed using lots of different shapes that we had been looking at in our maths work.
As the weather got a bit warmer in Percy’s Park the badger rolled around in the mud and needed to take a bath. He taught us all about the importance of keeping clean. We practiced washing our hands properly using a very special soap, PAINT !! The Fox and the Badger tried to surprise Percy in the story the Secret Path by getting to the middle of the maze before him. We took it in turns for each of our groups to make a maze using fencing stakes and bale twine. It was lots of fun. Before we leave the park and all Percy’s friends behind we hope he will take us on a treasure hunt with him. Lets hope we don’t get lost and can let you know how we got on some time.
